The Didgeridoo is played by vibrating the lips continuously to produce a drone sound, using a special breathing technique known as circular breathing. This involves inhaling through the nose while simultaneously expelling stored air out of the mouth using the tongue and cheeks. Skilled players can replenish the air in their lungs using this technique and sustain a note for as long as desired with practice.
A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2005 found that learning and practicing the Didgeridoo can help reduce snoring and sleep apnea by strengthening muscles in the upper airway. This strengthening effect occurs after the player has mastered the circular breathing technique.
