Bolga Baskets are traditionally made from discarded millet stalks, naturally dyed raffia but sometimes they are made from local grasses. Dried long elephant grass is usually available in bundles at African markets. This type of grass is flexible and strong allowing weavers to create the bespoke patterns. The baskets originated in a Ghanian town called Bolgatanga and even though these baskets were first made in 8000 BCE - Weaving is still to this day a traditional skill that the locals practice and use to make money. What makes the baskets special? They are made by hand and a basket typically takes about 2-4 days to make.
To make bolga baskets the straw is collected and split. All of the grass is gathered, it is rolled to add texture, it is naturally dyed to add colour, then the grass straw is weaved and once complete it has finishing touches added. The artisans who make these products design and choose the colours for each one individually which ensures you will have a product that is made just for you.
