making soy wax melts

Wax melts are fantastic to make a room smell nice whilst providing some health benefits. They are great for aromatherapy which makes us feel overall more relaxed. Commercially wax melts contain harsh synthetic fragrances which are bad for you and can pose health risks. Sometimes these wax melts also contain paraffin which is why making your own wax melts from home is a better choice. Making soy wax or beeswax melts at home with essential oil is the healthiest way to use them.

You can slowly melt the soy wax or beeswax melts in a ceramic oil burner to release the aroma into the room. Soy wax is considered to be a natural wax but it is made from GMO soy and so can never be organic despite other companies claims. Beeswax on the other hand is completely natural and is the byproduct made by bees. To make your very own wax melts you will need a silicone mould, a pouring jug, kitchen scales to measure out the wax, your preferred essential oils, and if you want to change the colour of the soy wax you can use a dye but we prefer to keep the colour natural.

When it comes to using essential oils you will need between 20-30 drops of essential oil. However, this does depend on whether the essential oil is a light aromatic scent or if it on the stronger side. You can use one specific essential oil that you like or if you’d prefer you can blend together oils that may compliment each other such as patchouli and lavender, orange and cinnamon or rose and geranium.

How to make soy wax melts (video)

What you will need for this project

  • Soy Wax
  • Pouring Jug
  • Silicone Mould
  • Essential Oil

Getting started

Before you can get started making your very own vegan soy wax melts you will need to decide a few things. You will need to decide which silicone mould to get as they came in many different shapes and will determine how your finished product looks. You could even experiment with using multiple moulds until you find one that you like.

The other thing you will want to consider is what essential oil you are going to use to scent your soy wax melts. You can use any essential oil you like, some popular options are lavender, vanilla, patchouli, sweet orange, lemon, chamomile, peppermint, sandalwood, and more, It's also worth knowing that different oils give different health benefits and can affect our mood. Finally if you would like to make organic wax melts you should ensure that you use an organic soy wax and organic essential oils. We avoid colourants because we believe that natural ingredients are the best and the most safe.

Recipe

Soy wax flakes (1/2 cup)

Essential oil (20-30 drops)

Method

The first thing you will want to do is add some water to a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Once it is boiling you will want to reduce the heat and add your soy wax to your pouring jug. Place the jug into the saucepan with the boiling water and carefully mix the wax to help it melt evenly. Soy wax typically has a melting point of 49 to 82 degrees Celsius.

Once it has melted add a few drops of your chosen essential oil to scent the wax then mix well. Then using an oven glove, carefully pour the melted wax into your silicone mould. Repeat until all of the wax has been poured from the jug and until your moulds are full. Next you will need to let the wax fully harden in the silicone moulds for around 24 hours. After that, the soy wax melts will be ready to use.

We hope that you have enjoyed our DIY guide and have fun making them. If you don’t want to make your own, you can buy our essential oil soy wax melts in packs of 12 with scents of patchouli and star anise with cinnamon.

Frequently asked questions

frequently asked questions

How to use soy wax melts

The first time I got wax melts as a gift, I had no idea what to do with them. In fact, all I knew about them was that they smelt nice. Perhaps you could put them in your drawer to make your clothes smell good or maybe in the bathroom to combat general odour. Even though those ideas could definitely work, it is not the intended use for them. Soy wax melts melt between 49 to 82 degrees Celsius and as they smell good because they are made with essential oils they need heat to vaporise the oil into the air.

To use your soy wax melts you will need an oil burner. This works by placing a lit candle inside the oil burner and placing the soy wax melt on top. As the oil burner begins to heat up, the wax will slowly melt causing it to release small amounts of essential oil into the atmosphere through a process called vaporisation. Depending on the scents in the soy wax melts, it could provide a variety of health benefits to you but can also affect your mood making you feel energised, relaxed, sleepy or even excited and happy.

Can you reuse soy wax melts?

Soy wax when warmed emits the aroma, and it doesn't evaporate. When the wax has been melted and there is no more aroma, the wax melt can be reused to make new melts or alternatively it can be disposed of.

Are they safe during pregnancy?

Certain essential oils are considered safe during pregnancy and others could be harmful. You should research the ingredients to ensure they are safe for you to use whilst pregnant. Ginger essential oil for example, can help during pregnancy with morning sickness, peppermint may be used for helping with nausea and muscle aches. If in doubt contact your healthcare professional.

What is the difference between soy wax melts and paraffin?

Most leading candle brands use paraffin in their candles and wax melts. Paraffin is dangerous  to health as it is made from petroleum which is a byproduct of making gasoline. Many studies found that burning paraffin wax released dangerous chemicals. Soy wax on the other hand is completely natural vegetable wax that is derived from the oil of soybeans.

Are they suitable for someone with asthma?

The information regarding essential oils and asthma is very mixed. For example, researchers have found that essential oils could be safe for people with asthma and some researchers have discovered that the oils could be dangerous. This varies from person to person. The AAFA do not recommend using essential oils to treat asthma. Some essentials oils like eucalyptus and peppermint also contain compounds that can irritate the lungs if inhaled, this is of course worse for asthma sufferers and babies. Make sure to use with caution.

What is the burn time of soy wax heart melts?

Soy wax typically melts within 5 minutes of burning, the amount of time for use is variable depending on many factors such as heat, type of diffuser oil burner, and even how large the candle is underneath.

Why are wax melts the best?

I have always wanted to introduce my own line of products. With a desire to make something that suited my personality. Handmade things that were either ornamental or functional fit these criteria. With a passion for all things healthy and natural. I set out to create something from organic wax so that I was contributing to a healthier world.

Perfect size

In my journey, I experimented with soy wax to make candles for the home. From there I decided to make something with essential oil scents that would give a pleasant but not overpowering aroma. These little heart-shaped melts are the perfect size just to place one over an oil burner. With a pack of 12 homemade wax melts, you will have plenty of occasions to use them.

Health Benefits

Currently, we have scents of star anise and cinnamon which was inspired by my love of freshly baked biscuits over the Christmas season. They are very festive and look absolutely stunning. As well as smelling divine, they look great and host many potential health benefits. Studies suggest that Star Anise alone has potent compounds that can be used to treat coughs and the flu. Whilst also alleviating digestion, nausea, gas, bloating and constipation.

Natural & Eco Friendly

If you compare one of those natural melts with all of the potential advantages to an average synthetic fragrance based by-product. There is literally no comparison at all. Not only is a generic product harmful, they usually don’t even smell all that great. One of the reasons that I searched for something natural is because as a teenager the aftershaves and perfumes that I had been given as a gift seemed to always give me a headache. These soy wax melts are made in the UK without the use of any dyes, and are hands down, the best.

Room deodoriser

Moving on to our other scent which is Patchouli. According to various internet sources, this scent is commonly used by the stereotype ‘hippies’ and is used to mask the smell of marijuana. Nonetheless, patchouli is strong but smells amazing. As with most essential oils, it also comes with so many health benefits and is a natural anti-inflammatory with antibacterial, antifungal properties, and is also an insecticide. The market is seeing a rise in Patchouli oil. It is now being used as a deodoriser in natural beauty products. If you have any bad smells in your home, patchouli is sure to get rid of them. Soon we will be looking into making new scents like gingerbread, and uplifting sweet citrus orange.

Organic

Our soy wax melts are made from organic soy wax, and organic essential oil blends which ensures a high quality product that is non toxic, and is free from harmful chemicals, pesticides and fertilisers.

Good price

The price is cheap but they are not made with cheap ingredients. As mentioned above all of the ingredients used are organic and are of the highest quality. This allows you to give a great gift on budget.

Vegan

These soy wax melts are made from plants and are therefore suitable for vegans to use. We want to educate the world so that we can all make better choices. Instead of buying from those big companies whose sole focus is their profit margins. Try out a pack of soy wax heart melts for you and your family today. These make a wonderful gift set.
